Pleated Blinds Look Beautiful In a Conservatory

Having grown up in a ‘curtain’ environment it wasn’t until marriage took me away from my childhood home and my Wife introduced me to the wonder and benefits of blinds that I realised what my parents had been missing.  Not just blinds though but pleated blinds in particular.

Having left the interior design of our new home to my better half I must admit to being somewhat taken aback when she suggested pleated blinds.  What about the curtains?

It wasn’t long before I realised just what a brilliant addition this type of blind made to the home and the interior decoration.  There was a wide selection to choose from with styles and varieties to suit any window in any house.  There are also many benefits of pleated blinds that make them more and more popular a each year goes by.

They look good on any size of window.  You cannot envisage a roman or roller blind on a small window but pleated blinds will do the trick.  They also help to control the amount of light that you may want at any particular time.  Warmth can be allowed into the room but without the blazing sunlight being admitted.  They do not block out the light in total so even when they are fully drawn there is always a modicum of brightness available.  Obviously if you need total darkness then a blackout blind is required.

In the main pleated blinds cost less than the aforementioned roller or roman kind and they are available with cord or can be cordless or even operated by remote control.  Another remote for the man of the house to play with.  With the cordless kind you will find they ensure easy maintenance and are easily operable by children.

When it comes to the actual buying of the blinds they can like most types of blind be custom made to snugly fit each window separately.  So, measure each window for size.   The width of the blind will be determined by the distance between the outermost points where the blind will hang.  The blind’s height can be measured from the top of the window to the window sill.  If there is no window sill present then take the measurement to the place you need the blind to reach to.

The majority of pleated blinds come in simple styles but with complete functionality.   In most cases if purchased from reputable stores or through the internet they will be backed by a warranty for the materials plus any workmanship that you may have performed for you.

The Importance of looking after the Guttering

If you did a survey of homeowners and asked them how many checked their guttering on a regular basis the answer would not be that many yet it is a vitally important job to do.   Rain gutters are there to protect your home from damage by water.  They are a very necessary part of your home and need to be kept free of debris to allow the rain water to run and flow freely the whole time.

During autumn and winter it is a good idea to check the gutters on a monthly basis.  Look for any items like acorns, leaves and even small branches or twigs that might inhibit the flow of the water.  This is extra important if you have foliage or trees growing nearby.  The maintenance of your gutters is important all the year round but more especially during these two seasons.

So what is all the fuss about?  Well, the gutters are there to do a job and must be allowed to do it properly.  If they become clogged up there are several ways they can cause havoc to your property.

To begin with debris can stop the water draining away from the façade and foundations of the house.  Any water that gets backed-up can enter the infrastructure of the property with the result that if it is not dealt with can corrode the walls, foundations and any basement that is present.   Structural repairs that will follow will cost substantial sums of money.

Also, the debris if left to build up can cause a sludge-like slimy material to form which can in time weaken the gutter and cause damage that way. Consequently the water will not drain as it should.  If the dirty water spills over the side of the gutter it will take the sludge with it and the property will be subjected to large dirty stains.

Another problem can come to the fore in icy and snowy weather.  In the UK we may not suffer as much as in say, America, but if the roof is covered by a lot of snow and it starts to melt quickly from the heat from the home then any water rushing into already debris filled gutters can easily re-freeze, creating more damage from overflows of ice.  Icicles are formed and although very pretty on postcards are not good for the home.  The weight of many icicles can put pressure on the gutters.  You do not need to be a brain surgeon to work out the next move for the gutters – downwards.

One of the main items necessary to help you clean the gutters is a step ladder or an extending ladder if your roof is high.  If you are not keen on doing this job yourself then look up in yellow pages for a reputable company or individual to do the job for you.  Even if it costs a few pounds this is an essential job that should not be left or forgotten.

Let Interior Design solve your storage problems, even on a budget.

If you listen to the news you will hear on a daily basis about the credit crunch, the global downturn, or the financial crisis. The fact is that money is now as tight as it has been in a generation. Everyone must tighten their belts and make the most of what they have got. After the recent budget this is particularly important for those on a low income who are very often caught between a rock and a hard place. As families grow their need for space increases but with money tight many cannot afford to upgrade their homes. This is where the need for interior design comes in to find a solution.

Interior design is not just about the colour you paint your walls or what kind of curtains you get. It is anything that involves a design inside and with money tight you really need to be smart with how you design your home. There are however a number of ways in which to make the most of your space.

If you have a large master bedroom then getting a fitted bedroom may be a good way to improve on space. This is where you get fitted wardrobes and drawers right round the outside with the bed positioned in one location. While this does create a lot more storage it can cost a fair bit which again may not be available in the current climate. It is a good option for those who do have some money but not enough to fund a move.

The children’s bedrooms are the places where there may be a big need for storage especially with the kids spending so much time in their rooms. A bunk bed is one way to maximise space allowing for more room to add a large or even second wardrobe. You can also get beds where the mattress is above a double set of drawers giving more space as there is no need for a separate chest of drawers.

Take a very careful look at the furniture available today. With the invention of the internet you can now access hundreds of stores where in the past you could only go to a handful. Within these stores are hundreds of different styles of furniture. These can include the relatively new triple wardrobe with drawers. It has the traditional hanging rail to hang your clothes but comes with drawers at the bottom. Basically it is a wardrobe and chest of drawers in one. It proves to be a great space saver giving a high level of storage.

For the rest of the house there is the traditional favourite the shelves and with fitted kitchens you can ensure that it has the maximum amount of space available. The key is to get furniture that fits perfectly and leaves to wasted spaces. If you think of all the space between floor and ceiling and get taller units you can really stretch the storage you have. That is a great move if you have a large collection of books.

These are all ways you can make the most of the space you have while not having to have a huge budget to afford the changes. While they may not be all right for you some of them will no doubt be so pick the right ones for you, increase your storage and enjoy the fact you still have money left in the bank. Interior design is about making the most of the home with a design that solves a problem. In this case the problems can easily be solved with a little creative thinking.

Is a New Roof Required?

Considering the roof  is protecting all your worldly goods its importance cannot be underestimated.  Can you just imagine the colossal upheaval that would occur if a sudden gust of wind was to dislodge what you had erroneously thought was a safe and secure roof?  Many of us, the writer included, were left partly roofless in the October 1987 storm but this doesn’t happen on a  regular basis thank goodness.  However attention to the roof is paramount at all times.

If you have a growth of algae, or curling and blistering on the roof you may need a new one.  Also if some of the tiles are missing or dislodged or there is rotting present this may mean repair is needed.  If there is an obvious sagging or dark unexplained patches have appeared then action is required poste haste.

The question you have to ask yourself is whether after these repairs the roof will still need maintenance in the days ahead.  Is it worthwhile having certain jobs carried out or is it worth investing in a brand new roof.  In the long run it may make economic sense to decide upon the latter.

Quite simply a decision has to be reached and reached fast before another bout of inclement weather strikes and worsens any problem to a deeper degree.  An inspection both inside and out is on the cards but with the latter make sure you do not actually walk on the roof.  This could result in any unsteady parts becoming even more damaged.  Use a ladder for a close inspection plus for any confirmation of problems use binoculars as well. Perform the outside inspection first.

Internally the inspection may take more time but is well worth the effort.  Look for any sign that may need attention.  Is the roof sagging anywhere especially between the rafters?  Can you see daylight between any of the tiles?  Are there any ceiling spots which could indicate leaking?  Are any of the rafters wet to the touch or is any of the wood crumbly to the touch?

Irrespective of the amount of effort made in the maintenance of your roof in some circumstances complete replacement may be the only way forward.  You must seek professional assistance.   They will have the job completed far in excess of your capabilities and inconvenience will be cut to a minimum.   Obtain a number of different estimates and if possible select someone who has done work locally that you can witness first hand perhaps even speaking to the family involved, after all this is a major job.  Make sure you get at least a ten year guarantee from the builders.

Finally, think of the neighbours and advise them that there will be some additional noise for a day or two.

Triple Wardrobes

The best all in one wardrobes have got to be the triple wardrobes. They are a great way of getting the most out of your bedroom maximising the storage you can get out of it. Triple wardrobes are large enough to have a number of different designs so you can get the wardrobe that fits your needs the most.

Whether it is extra hanging rail or room for folded storage there is a triple wardrobe for you. While you can get a triple wardrobe that has nothing but hanging rails you can also get triple wardrobes that include shelves behind one of the doors. You can also get several designs that include drawers at the base. These sometimes include a variety of sizes giving you true flexibility over your storage. This is a good idea especially if you do not have enough room for a separate chest of drawers.

So when looking for a triple wardrobe remember that with the number of designs out there you can find the one for you and if you are limited on space they can perform the role of wardrobe and chest of drawers removing the need for two separate pieces of furniture. This can also prove to be better on the wallet too. For more information on Triple Wardrobes simply click here.
